Plant Protection section of Malda Krishi Vigyan Kendra has a vast area to cover the control measures for the cereals, fruits, vegetables, orchards, spices etc. in Malda district. As mango is the major fruit crop of this district, the special emphasis has to be given to this orchard crop. Besides this, Malda is the distributing center for rice and other staple foods. We have also given priority on the productivity and quality of the staple foods. Blast disease, BLB, etc. in rice and hopper, trunk borer, fruit fly etc. in mango are predominant here. We have done some On Farm Trail, Front Line Demonstration and Training on this purpose to aware the farming community to adopt new technologies and curb this nuisance from the root level. In this year, we started some OFT on some vegetables against some pests and diseases which are new to this district. Apart from this, there is a Plant Health Clinic to diagnose the infested plant samples and preserve them for demonstration purpose. Other than this, there is also a well equipped Mushroom Laboratory where we produce mushroom spawn and train the farm women and rural youth about ‘Low-cost Mushroom Production” every year. We also maintain the prescription book to suggest the farmers and recommend suitable control measures for the infested plant parts.
